How to choose a vocation?
God has a calling for all of us in our lives to try and bring us closer to Him. How we know which vocation He is leading us towards is the ultimate question many will have. The best thing is to pray/meditate asking our Lord for His guidance to help lead us. The different vocations are marriage, priesthood, religious life, and single life. Each has its role to play in the world to help spread the faith and live a life free of sin.
So, how do you choose?
From what I’ve listened to and read before it’s not necessarily something that you have to rush into. It’s something that will reveal itself with time and a true understanding of how you will live your life. We are all born single if you think too deeply even though you might not be that way forever. People are always growing and developing and one way I believe you can view it is to live your life through your current vocation at the time. While single live your life for God through your connection together. If you find yourself attracted to another and wish to pursue a relationship together then change your vocation to prepare for marriage with that partner and journey together towards God. Same thing with the priesthood or religious life do your best to live your current vocation towards God. With time God will help reveal to you if you’re on the right path towards Him.
Your devotion to God might look weak or undecided, but this is not the case. It’s difficult to understand where God wants to lead us. It doesn’t hurt to try and see where you and your relationship with God best fit together for this world. I’ve personally seen this happen with others. I was in college where a seminarian was previously in a relationship with a woman and before they ended up getting married he believed instead of marriage that he was being called to the priesthood. It wasn’t until he was ready to take the oath of becoming a priest that he reconnected with the woman he didn’t marry and ended up marrying her and leading his life towards God with his wife.
Some could say how could someone just change their mind so easily, but that is not the case I believe it took him and others like him a lot of time and reflection to understand where their role in God’s world is. What you don’t want to do is hate or blame God for the current vocation you’re in. Trust and believe that He has a plan for you and work towards Him in your current vocation and His plan will reveal itself to you.
